Blankslates

When to use a blankslate

View in Figma

Blankslate components have two uses cases: monitoring and configuring. In either case, use a Blankslate to represent an absence of data, whether in something like a dashboard visualization where data may not exist or in the context of a CRUD flow where the user has yet to create a particular item (Rules, Signals, Integrations, etc…).

Avoid 'Learn More' links in Blankslate unless they link to onboarding instructions. Add 'Learn More' links to the end of Page Subtitle instead so users will always have quick access to them.

Monitoring Blankslate

If the user is monitoring the content on the page and there is no option to configure anything, state that there is nothing to view. This applies to most content in the Dashboard.

Configuring Blankslate

If a user is on a configuration page and has not yet created an item, add a subtitle to the Blankslate to provide additional context around what the user can configure and what the next steps are to get started. Content should follow this formula:

  • Title: You have no (page title) yet
  • Subtitle: Provide examples of what you can configure, and what the next steps are after you configure them
